NHS Providers chart builder in the Umbraco CMS back office
NHS Providers is the membership organisation and trade association for the NHS acute, ambulance, community and mental health services that treat patients and service users in the NHS.
NHS Providers challenged GrowCreate to help simplify their charting requirements by developing a chart builder in the Umbraco back office, redesigning the home page and designing and developing a digital publications solution to sit within the same installation as the existing website.
The website was inherited from another agency which had left some legacy tasks incomplete, and post migration and after a technical review we have commenced on an ongoing improvements project.
We were engaged after a tender process as we already had charting experience with both the Nuffield Trust and QualityWatch. Daniel Reynolds, Director of Communications knew that “an agency with expert knowledge of Umbraco CMS and a track record of working with similar organisations would really benefit NHS Providers.”
The process started with both a user experience and technical workshop to pin down requirements. NHS Providers have a broad team from data analysts to in-house design, and as we were working on three core requirements there was an element of fine-tuning our process to collaborate fully.

One of the larger challenges as a digital agency is inheriting legacy code. We don’t always know what we will find and we can’t guarantee that in the process of development that dependencies won’t cause issues for the team. Luckily the code was relatively modern and just needed some tender loving care. We upgraded the installation to the latest version of Umbraco and created our development and staging servers.
This project had a bit of everything for our team. The UXers got to design a digital publications solution which needed to look modern and would compare with other similar sites while still providing new features. Meanwhile the developers got to stretch themselves by extending Umbraco with an interactive charting solution in the back office.
This charting solution was the real challenge of the project. It would allow NHS Providers to provide recent data in an easy to digest way without any extra help from a developer. Deborah Gulliver, the Data Analyst at NHS Providers had the requirement for fourteen different chart types and the ability to import data from a number of different data sources including CSV and Excel files. To accomplish this, we designed and built a new section in Umbraco which allows the importing of data, and then the manipulation of this data so it could be put into a chart that could be rendered on the front end. Deborah said “the ability to be able to create interactive charts prior to publication is a game changer for my role within the organisation.”
With a fixed deadline and a looming annual conference, everybody stepped up to deliver the project on time and to budget. Daniel Reynolds says: “Thanks for the excellent work you have carried out on our website. We’re really delighted with the results — the charting, new homepage and publishing platform really help move us forward.”
- Mobile engagement +69% post launch
- +26% increase on average time on page
- -9% drop in bounce for new home page design
- -26% decrease in page load time (home page redesign)
* Statistics based on a comparison between August and December 2016. Post deployment of improvements project.
